International Master in Synthetic Biology

Training and Research Program

PLAN

The network for synthetic biology in the Upper Rhine valley (NSB-UpperRhine), supported by the INTERREG IV Program of the EU develops a project of TRAINING and RESEARCH in synthetic biology. This new discipline is rapidly changing with fascinating potential in several areas:

  • Therapeutic (medical, veterinary),
  • Preservation of ecosystems (phyto approaches, soil bioremediation),
  • Optimal exploitation of biomass (bio-energy).

The aim is to boost the biotechnology by diversifying the training potential and strengthening scientific links between the university partners of the Upper Rhine, especially between the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Strasbourg.

Training

The School of Biotechnology of Strasbourg, an engineering school of the University of Strasbourg, is located on the Innovation Park of Illkirch-Graffenstaden. It is tri-national and associates currently 3 Upper Rhine Universities, those of Basel (B), Freiburg (F) and Strasbourg (S), jointly entitled to deliver the title of graduate engineer.

The French engineering schools have the opportunity, in complement to their traditional training leading to the award of an engineering degree, to develop new curriculum valorizing their skills at the Master level.

In this context, ESBS was authorized to issue a Master reserved for foreign students. The specialty of this Master is centered on the highly innovative field of biotechnology: Synthetic Biology (Biological Engineering). This training will be conducted in close partnership with colleagues from B, F and S, on a program of teaching and research to which a laboratory of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (K) will be associated, in addition. With a solid reputation in molecular biology and genetic engineering, ESBS is preparing the next generation of biotechnologists by strengthening its expertise in synthetic biology. To this end, it will host, in his own research institute (IREBS: http://irebs.u-strasbg.fr), a small group from the Basel antenna of ETH Zurich, specialized in this area . On the other hand, partners of F and K have skills highly complementary to those developed in B and S.

Implementation of the “International Master of ESBS”

  • Opening the Master in September 2012
  • Preregistration March-June 2012
  • ESBS Contact: tel +33 68 85 46 80

All partners (B, F, K and S) contribute to the teaching and establish internships for students in the corresponding host laboratories. It is a matter of attracting the best students for a training at the highest level in biotechnology and to let it know to the industry. The teaching will take place in a multicultural atmosphere and provide students with the required ease to access the international market of employment.
